dj_damien @ 05:11 pm: Rage Against The Machine

So it's looking as if
Rage Against The Machine may well be this year's Christmas #1.
To be honest, it's been a good few years since downloads started being counted in with physical sales, so I'm kinda' surprised that this internet trolling of the #1 spot hasn't happened before (like, how is Rick Astley NOT #1 every week?).
I had mixed feelings about this at first.
While I'm in total agreement that Simon Cowell's X Factor machine has totally ruined the English Christmas #1 tradition, the picking of an 18 year old song nothing to do with Christmas seemed a bit bizarre.
Lots of people seem to be buying (or at least saying they're buying)
Killing In The Name purely to stand up against Christmas, or try to do something big, take money away from Simon Cowell.
The only way that any money will be taken away from Simon Cowell, is if somebody that was planning to buy Joe McElderry's (I had to Google that :p) single, decides to buy RATM instead.
Buying in to a stranger's internet joke is not so much
"Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" as
"That sounds like a great idea, I'm going to do just that!".
While Simon Cowell publicly stating that the whole fiasco annoys him looks like a bad move on his part, he knew what he was doing, and knew that it was sure to generate sales on both camps, lining his pockets even more as people that were on the fence jumped to one side, and coughed up for a download.
Until yesterday, I didn't know that the guys organising the appeal were also urging people to donate to charity, which they have. So far they've raised over £50,000 for Shelter, which si great, and so much more meaningful than what we're going to hear on Top of The Pops come Christmas day.
Tom Morello saying he'll also be giving whatever he makes off this to charity also pulls me further to his camp.
The choice is now between a boring guy (albeit a popular, publicly voted for boring guy) singing a song that doesn't suit his voice, and something a bit different, that's going to make a difference to something that matters.
I'm all for the end of Cowell's boring domination of the Christmas number one spot, and think this is just the first step on what will probably be seen as the next revolution.
Hopefully next year we get a Christmas song at Christmas #1!
Me, I'm not buying.
I've had
Killing In The Name in mp3 form for around 10 years (back in the days when I sued to listen to a lot of music in this genre), and think the appeal has gone beyond needing my sale.
I'll be donating my quid directly to shelter.
My the best song win :}
